Start with a Plan

Before you get a jump start by buying a bunch of plants, you need to create a plan. You will want to set up an area to build your garden. If you have shady trees in your yard, then go to those first. Find a spot near the trees to set up your area. You may want to design a garden space, how you want your shade garden to look. Once you have a design planned perfectly, you are ready to get to work.

Get your Plants

When you’re building a shade garden in your yard, you will need plants great for shade. The point of having a shade garden is that there isn’t very much natural sunlight in the area you place your garden. One type of plant that thrives in shady areas is different ferns. Some good choices may be Christmas ferns, Japanese painted ferns or even ostrich ferns among others.

To go along with your ferns, you’re going to want some color. There are plenty of flowers that work great in shady areas. If you want something small that will give your gardens sweet pops of color, try something like an alyssum, or you can’t go wrong with some begonias. Of course, you will want to choose the right flowers for your garden area. It’s up to you how your shade garden looks.

Grab Some Decretive Touches

If you want more than just plants and flowers in your garden, then there are many things you can add. Sometimes just placing some plants into lovely planters will help the overall look of the garden. Lots of people enjoy setting up a decorative arch or place a little fence around the yard or even a beautiful gate. And there are lots of other garden decorations you could put in place. Popular choices include fountains and gazing balls, or even outdoor statuettes designed just for gardens. There’s nothing wrong with the classic gnome or gargoyle. This is the one area you can get creative in, so your only limit is your imagination.

If you have something large like an arch or a fence, set that up first. Arrange your plants according to your plan and then finish your decorating. However you set it up is your choice, just as long as you have the right plants and arrange them to best suit their needs.
