Mountain laurel is a lovely evergreen shrub that is popular for many landscaping designs. Also known as the American laurel or calico bush, mountain laurels are tall evergreen shrubs with a broad range of frost and heat tolerance. They are found naturally from New England to the Florida panhandle. These rounded bushes can reach up to fifteen feet in both height and width, with intensely green leaves and charming gnarled branches. In the spring, these shrubs produce pink or white starburst blooms, giving way to small, brown fruits in the autumn.
There are several varieties of mountain laurel that offer a broad range of blooms in varying shades, as well as some options for size or height. It is a reasonably drought-resistant plant, but when the plants are young or growing in areas of high temperature, be sure to keep the soil moist (not boggy). Use the same type of acidic fertilizers recommended for rhododendron and azalea for best results.
Mountain laurel makes an excellent centerpiece for a woodland garden, and can also be used to beautify a shady walkway, patio, or sitting area.
These shrubs are relatively low-maintenance once adequately established in the right conditions and do not require a lot of pruning or annual upkeep. However, deadheading the blooms will help encourage increasingly better flower production, and pruning can be used to maintain their unique and charming shape.
Mountain laurel is sun-tolerant but grows best in partial shade to partial sun. Their soil needs are a bit meticulous, requiring well-drained areas of acidic soil in the pH range of 5.0 to 5.5. Avoid heavy clay soil for this shrub, as the mountain laurel does not tolerate extremely wet conditions for too long.
The Mountain Laurel is an evergreen thus the leaves are green all year long.
It is quite unique from most other plants in it's category. It is commonly a bit crooked, not tall and straight like most shrubs. The root systems of the Mountain Laurel are also quite different. They do not have many little fibers growing along the roots like most other trees and shrubs do. Yet they will still grow just a well as any other plant.
