Product Description

Live Poinsettia Plants

The poinsettia is a stunning ornamental plant, especially during Christmas. Native to Mexico, it is named after Joel Poinsett, the first United States Minister to Mexico, who introduced the plant to the U.S. in the 1820s.

How do you care for poinsettia plants?

  1. Appearance: Poinsettias are known for their large, colorful bracts surrounding small, inconspicuous flowers. The bracts can be red, pink, white, or even variegated.
  2. Seasonal Significance: Poinsettias are often associated with Christmas and are commonly used as decorative plants during the holiday season.
  3. Care:   Light: Poinsettias prefer bright, indirect light. It is not recommended to place them in direct sunlight for extended periods.
    • Temperature: They thrive between 60-70°F (15-21°C) during the day and a bit cooler at night.
    • Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Always let the top inch of soil to dry before watering again.
    • Humidity: Poinsettias prefer higher humidity, so misting the plant occasionally can be beneficial.
    • Avoid Drafts: Poinsettias are sensitive to drafts and swift temperature changes, so keep them away from drafts and heating vents.
  1. Toxicity: Poinsettias are often mistakenly believed to be highly toxic. While the sap may cause skin irritation in some individuals and can be mildly toxic if ingested, severe poisoning is rare.
  2. Pruning: To maintain a bushy shape, pinch back the stems in late spring or early summer. Avoid pruning after September 1st.

Is it okay to buy poinsettias online?

We package your poinsettias properly to ensure they arrive safely in the mail to look just as stunning if you bought them from your local garden center.

If you receive a poinsettia as a holiday gift, you can enjoy it as a temporary houseplant, and with proper care, it can last beyond the Christmas season.

Each Poinsettia plant has a decorative foil around the pot.
