Plants of Key West
Feb 06, 2024
Key West, the southernmost city in the continental United States, is renowned for its breathtaking beauty, unique charm, and vibrant atmosphere. From stunning sunsets to a tropical paradise, there is so much to love about the city. One of the most overlooked beauties of Key West is the lush, abundant plants that inhabit the island. The combination of warm temperatures and ample rainfall contributes to the flourishing flora on the island.
Here are a few of our favorites:
Key West Coconut Palm (Cocos nucifera): The coconut palm is an iconic symbol of the tropics. With its gracefully arching fronds and coconuts, it's a common sight along the beaches and throughout Key West.

Purple Allamanda: The most distinctive feature of the Purple Allamanda is its large, trumpet-shaped flowers that come in shades of purple.
Foliage: The plant has glossy, deep green leaves that hue an attractive background to the vibrant purple flowers.
Giant Sword Fern: The Giant Sword Fern (Nephrolepis biserrata) is a large and graceful fern species known for its impressive size and distinctive fronds. The fronds can grow up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) in length, creating a lush and dramatic presence in gardens or landscapes. For a guaranteed sighting of these massive ferns, a stroll down the Truman Annex is sure to be the place to view them. The streets of Truman Annex are lined with stunning plants year-round.
Frangipani (Plumeria spp.): Known for its fragrant and colorful flowers, it is a tropical favorite. It boasts beautiful pink blossoms as big around as your fist! The flowers are often used in leis, and the tree adds a delightful aroma.
These are just a few plants you can enjoy while visiting Key West. All the ones listed above may not be native plants, but they can handle the island's stunning tropical climate.
