Product Description

Spotted Wintergreen - Chimaphila maculata

The Spotted Wintergreen is a rare sight, and therefore a welcome addition to any landscaping project. This plant is a somewhat understated one, so it is perfect for planting with other greenery around it. However, it will catch any onlooker's eye with its beautiful coloring and delicate blooms. It will thrive in warm conditions and is often used underneath larger shrubs to add color, interest, and variance. The leaves at the base of the plant are a luscious dark green, with a light-colored variation of light green and white through the center of the leaves. In the center of the leaf cluster, a thin stem shoots up to showcase the creamy white, elegant flowers. The gentle flowers have a slight droop to them, adding to the delicate softness of the overall plant.

The Spotted Wintergreen is native to several areas in the United States.

It requires very well-drained soil, and it prefers a sandy substrate underneath. This plant also has a long history of being used for healing purposes. These purposes include both common ailments, like basic first aid for abrasions and wounds, and also for some more severe illnesses, such as arthritic conditions and urinary tract issues. Many customers enjoy having specific plants in the garden at hand to use medicinally.
For those looking for year-round color in their landscaping project, the Chimaphila maculata is a perfect plant to include due to its evergreen qualities. It will stay relatively small, eliminating the need for pruning or cutting back each year. Therefore, it is relatively low maintenance and hearty. It can often grow in areas with mountains and heavily wooded areas. This plant grows best in zones 6-7.

The Spotted Wintergreen is ideal for those wanting uniquely new foliage that is also relatively low maintenance.

Received already leafed-out. Not growing yet. We will see what happened. Optimistic.

Very nice amount of plants, very generous. Thanks, although most of the plants looked kind of dried.

I received mostly healthy looking bare root plants, although one was a little less so. I planted them all - they're looking ok but there are no signs of growth. I had some last year which died, probably from being in too moist a spot. This year I put them in a better drained area and hope they will thrive there.

    I ordered 2 but received 4

    Feb 12, 2021 Reviewer: Connie

I was pleasantly surprised by the generosity of my order fulfillment. I ordered two plants but was provided with four live plants in excellent condition. I gently tucked them into my zone 10 rock garden and they are thriving on the winter rain. One plant was a foot long runner and had sprouted on both ends so that should fill out the garden rather nicely. FYI: My local native plants can’t abide the summer irrigation but these east coast natives give a woodland look to a shady boggy corner.

    1 out of 2 alive

    Jun 18, 2020 Reviewer: Baker

When I received the plants, it appeared that one out of the 2 I ordered was a little bit stressed. I planted them both and the "stressed" one died fairly quickly. The other survived for at least 6 months in the ground, but appears to be dying now, perhaps due to improper conditions (which is of no fault of nativewildflowers.net). I'm sure they were very happy & healthy plants before they were shipped to me, and it's expected that some will die during shipping. They were shipped bareroot, in a sealed sandwich ziploc bag with the plant name written on the bag. Each plant was maybe 3-6 inches tall.
