Product Description

Bellwort

Add a little woodland fairy magic to your garden with the delicate, flowering Bellwort, Uvularia grandiflora. Also called Merry Bells, Bellwort is a Northeast American perennial staple that provides excellent ground cover and brings cheer to any landscape. This plant can grow to be almost 24 inches tall, and 18 inches wide. In the early spring, it bears yellow, bell-shaped flowers and heart-shaped leaves.

Where to Grow

While the hardy little plants thrive in most environments, they require some drainage to stay at their healthiest. Bellwort is best grown in USDA hardiness zones 4-9 and will do well in a fully shaded, well-watered corner of your yard. Place plants near shaded shrubs with adequate organic compost and watch them blossom!

How to Grow

Bellwort blooms in the spring and falls back in colder months, making it a low maintenance ground cover that requires no pruning.

The best way to grow the wildflower is to buy a starter plant from a nursery, and you can use mulch to protect it during the winter. In the early spring, the plant can be divided at the roots and transplanted.

Curative Properties

Not just a beautiful addition to any forest inspired garden; Bellwort is also famous for its uvula like shape. Its shape, combined with its ancient usage as a sore throat remedy, is what motivates its Latin name, Uvularia. Historically, the flower was also used in salves to treat skin conditions like boils or burns.

No matter your reason for wanting Bellwort in your backyard, it adds a touch of magic to any natural, woodland garden. It’s perfect for fully shaded areas in a garden, especially in temperate, moist places. This early blooming wildflower is excellent for attracting honey bees in the early spring, its many healing benefits, or just for enjoying in wooded margins throughout your garden.

The Bellwort is shipped bare root.
