Maidenhair Fern
The Maidenhair fern, Adiantum pedatum, is a beautiful addition to any shaded garden. The graceful green foliage grows best in moist well-drained areas. They are great for landscaping around homes, native gardens and also great plants for containers. Its genus name Adiantum translates to “non-wetting” and is referring to the fronds’ ability to shed rainwater without becoming wet whatsoever. This plant is sometimes used for aromatic oil in hair shampoos thus the name "maidenhair." So when company adores your beautiful plants, you also have incredible stories and history to give them as well.
The perfect addition to the shady or partially shady spot in the garden, Maidenhair fern is frilly and delicate.
Fern foliage adds interest as a background for smaller plants. Mix Maidenhair fern with other ferns for a frilly focal point in the landscape. Grow in a hanging basket to fully display the cascading fronds. Once located in moist soil, this plant needs little attention. Grow in a spot where shade covers the plant for most of the day or a bright area without direct rays. This plant can handle filtered early morning rays for a short time.
The fronds of the fern are shaped somewhat like a hand, and they are very different in appearance than any other fern on Earth. They are deciduous and very easy to grow. They show growth in Summer and look beautiful until Fall when the leaves die back for the season, and the plant goes dormant for the Winter months. Maidenhair ferns will bloom year after year without having to replant. This fern grows best in partial shade in zones 3-8.
