Product Description

 Partridge Berry

Named for the bird that feasts on its berries, partridge berry vines are trailing evergreen plants with fragrant white flowers that appear in pairs. The flowers are from 1/2 to 2/3 inch long and are tubular, with four lobes. They are fringed within. The flowers are not sexed and appear in June and July. The bright red, berry-like fruit that eventually seems is not only edible for birds and other wildlife but people. Interestingly, it takes two flowers to produce one berry. The plant’s botanical name is Mitchella repens.

The plant is also succulent, which means it stores water in its leaves. The leaves are about 1/2 to 3/4 inches long, somewhat round, shiny and green. Their veins are white, which makes them especially attractive. The flowers and leaves appear on a slender, 4 to 12-inch stem.

Besides being beautiful, partridge berry vines are quite hardy plants and can grow in many types of soil.

Soils include those that are sandy, loamy, dry and moist and acidic to neutral. It can stand a little bit of salt. They are native to North America and grow well in hardiness zones 4A to 9B, or from Maine to Florida and Texas. The plant prefers partial shade and needs moderate watering. Because the vine doesn’t climb but creeps, it makes an excellent ground cover, especially under acid-loving shrubs. It is best grows best from cuttings or divisions and multiplies. A gardener can also raise the vine from seed, though this is uncommon. They are hardy in zones 3-9.

This is a non-climbing vine. It is an evergreen and produces small red berry-like fruit. The ground covers shiny green leaves make them a must-have for gardeners. The plants arrived with leaves on them and looked healthy. They are now planted and I am hopeful that they will do well.

    Partridge Berry Review

    Nov 28, 2020 Reviewer: Lin

I just received the second of two Partridge Berry shipments. The plants were fresh and ready to plant. My order was large so it was divided into two shipments which the nursery kept me informed about. The first batch went in about 2-3 weeks ago and the plants look good and seem to be doing well. I will likely order form nativewildflowers again as I am looking for native options in my landscape.
