The Beautiful Red Cardinal Flower

 

The Red Cardinal flower is one of the most exciting garden flowers today blooms from July through September. The Red Cardinal Flower (known by the botanical name Lobelia cardinalis) prefers moist, damp soils. Native to Missouri, it thrives from Southeastern Canada across the eastern half of the United States, into the Southwest, Mexico, and Central America.
The plant does very well across a broad spectrum of gardening zones between 3 and 9. However, it does not demand daily attention.

The Red Cardinal Flower prefers full sunlight but thrives in partial shade in drier locations.

Hummingbirds and butterflies both find its brilliant five-lobed blooms appealing.
This beautiful, hardy flower withstands foraging deer and rabbits better than many other garden blossoms. It makes an exceptionally smart choice for use in damp spots beside waterways and ponds. It will survive heavy rainfalls, making it an attractive selection in areas prone to occasionally waterlogged soil. (Although it does grow well in Canada, horticultural experts suggest protecting its roots with mulch during cold winters.)

Red Cardinal Flower, Lobelia Cardinalis grow in moist and even wetland areas and has bright red flowers that usually appear around May.

    Plants are very tiny but have adequate roots. Since we are still getting snow where I am I can’t put outside. I potted them in professional grow mix and put them in my garage 55° with bright indirect light but I think I’m going to lose them. They are just very small about 1 inch. I have grown professionally and I would only recommend if you are experienced with plants or wait for warmer weather, though the plants are healthy

    they arrived quicly and were healthy. However they were very small, I am keeping my fingers crossed that they will make it.

    The little guys were leafed with a great root system. They were so healthy. This is the second time I have ordered them and had similar delightful results both times.

    Ordered three, 5 arrived but all looking pretty beat up in transit (along with some other things I ordered). I put them in a pot under a grow light and 2 survived to be transplanted into the garden. We shall see if they bloom!
